For you as the client, predictability of the costs of engaging a professional is important, with flow on benefits to your  internal budget.  By managing these external costs, you are demonstrating good management practices. 

Such management ensures the professional focuses on the big picture, objectives, strategy and results.  If the ground rules are clear from the outset, the outcomes are far more likely to meet expectations and the relationship between professional and client is strengthened. 

Many clients are concerned that any attempt to manage the external professional’s costs will have deleterious effects on the client/professional relationship.  Sometimes this is true.  But our experience is in creating a win-win arrangement which is cost effective but delivers value to both professional and client.  Rewards for meeting guidelines, or achieving goals and exceeding benchmarks provide incentives to all parties.  The reward may be a financial payment, or for, example, a guarantee of a certain level of work, or exclusive use of that firm in a particular area of work.
